total thickness of the metal layer removed on a machined surface is
called the total processing allowance of the surface in the process of
converting the semifinished product into the finished product. The thickness of the metal layer removed by each process is called the processing allowance between operations.
The outer circle and hole rotating surface, the machining allowance is
considered from the diameter, called symmetrical margin (i.e. bilateral
margin), the thickness of the metal layer is removed by the actual
machining allowance on half diameter.
The processing allowance of the plane is a single margin, which is
equal to the thickness of the metal layer which is actually removed.
Keep the machining allowance on the workpiece in order to resect a
process left by the machining error and surface defects to the casting
surface, such as chilled layer, porosity, sand layer, forging the
surface oxide skin, decarburized layer, surface crack, cutting the
stress layer and surface roughness etc.. So as to improve the accuracy and surface roughness of the workpiece. The machining allowance has a great influence on the machining quality and production efficiency.
The machining allowance is too large, not only increases the amount of
labor in the machining process, reduces productivity, but also increases
the materials, tools and power consumption, and improves the processing
If the machining allowance is too small, it can not eliminate all kinds
of defects and errors in the upper process, and can not compensate the
clamping error in the process, resulting in waste products. The selection principle is to make the margin as small as possible under the premise of guaranteeing the quality. Generally speaking, the more finishing, the smaller the process allowance.
